Gas Leak Near Queensboro Plaza Station Prompts Closures: FDNY

ASTORIA, QUEENS — A gas leak near Queensboro Plaza on Monday morning prompted the closure of some subway entrances and streets as fire officials evacuated a nearby building.

Shortly after 9:00 a.m., a contractor hit a gas line in the basement of the construction site located at 25-01 Queens Plaza North.

Fire officials quickly rushed to the site, and evacuated all workers at the building.

The FDNY also shut down Queens Plaza North between 27th Street and 24th Street, blocking some entrances to the Queensboro Plaza subway station, including an elevated walkway between the station and the building with the gas leak, reports show.

By 9:45 a.m. Con Edison was also working on the gas leak, according to fire officials. The energy company quickly shut off gas to the construction site and another nearby building, FDNY scanner reports indicate.

The incident hasn't caused subway delays, MTA records show.
