LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — A Long Island City-made ham sandwich, which Eater's Ryan Sutton compared to an "elegant monster truck," was among one of the best dishes that the critic ate this year.

After eating some meals inside citywide restaurants (among which Sutton said one from Queens is outstanding), Eater's chief critic found that his favorite eats were those that could be taken to-go and eaten in a park, including the ham and cheese sandwich from Ghaya.

Famed pastry chef Ghaya Oliveira's eponymous cafe-slash-bakery in Long Island City's Jacx & Co food hall, serves up the sandwich in question, which Sutton recommended in his column "Buy, Sell, Hold" in November.

In reflecting on the sandwich, which is made with 11 alternating layers of cured and sliced pork and emmentaler cheese placed between buttered layers of toasted croissant, Sutton described it as "equal parts sweet pork, crunchy viennoiserie, and funky fromage."
