Health Risk Prompts Frozen Spinach Recall From Astoria Market

Astorians who bought frozen, chopped spinach at Lidl should double check the package before using it, the FDA warned.

ASTORIA, QUEENS — Astorians who bought frozen, chopped spinach from a local grocery store should double check the package before using it, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned.

Lidl's 12-ounce bags of frozen, chopped spinach are being recalled over possible listeria contamination, the FDA said, noting that the recalled items are marked with lot #R17742 or R17963 on the back with a best by date of Sept. 10, 2023.

The recalled frozen chopped spinach was distributed to Lidl stores across nine states, including New York, according to the FDA.

Listeria is a kind of bacteria that can cause serious, and sometimes fatal, infections in people with weaker immune systems, like young children and elderly people.

Infections in healthy, younger people typically present with high fever, headaches, stiffness, nausea, and — in the case of pregnant people — can cause miscarriages and stillbirths, the FDA warned.

As of last week, though, no illnesses had been reported in connection with the recalled products, according to the FDA.

The agency is urging customers who bought the possibly-contaminated packages of Lidl spinach to return them to the store of purchase for a full refund.
