LIC Hit-And-Run Crash Leaves Motorcyclist In Critical Condition: NYPD

A driver hit a motor-scooter rider in a Hunter's Point intersection Wednesday — sending him flying — before fleeing the scene, police said.

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — A motorcyclist was in critical condition after being struck in a Long Island City intersection by a driver who fled the scene, according to police.

The crash at the intersection of 44th Drive and Vernon Boulevard happened around 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Police believe the victim, a 30-year-old man, was riding his motor-scooter westbound along 44th Drive as the driver of an unknown vehicle headed south along Vernon.

The driver struck the motorcyclist in the intersection, ejecting him from his vehicle. The man suffered severe head trauma and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Police are actively seeking the driver, who fled the scene. The NYPD's Highway Collision Investigation Squad is investigating, police said.

A dozen people have been injured in crashes at the same intersection since 2011, including seven drivers, four pedestrians and one cyclist, according to data compiled by CrashMapper.
