LIC Worker Jumps On Car Hood In Failed Attempt To Stop Theft: Police

A man stole a car from a Long Island City parking lot as an attendant clambered onto the hood in a vain attempt to stop it, police said.

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — A wild car theft at a Long Island City parking lot last week featured an attendant clambering onto the hood of the $21,000 car in a vain attempt to stop it, police said.

The 49-year-old worker leapt onto the white Kia sedan as it rolled out of the parking lot on Crescent Street and 41st Avenue — a block north of Queens Plaza — about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

The car thief had hopped behind the wheel of the 2017 Kia, found keys inside the car, and decided to drive off with it, police said.

The suspect drove for several feet before the employee fell off the hood and he was able to escape with the car, police said.

The employee suffered a minor leg injury from the fall, police said.

Police released surveillance footage of the suspect at the parking lot, describing him as a man in his 20s or 30s, on Sunday.

The stolen car has the license plate number UGD782, police said.
