LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — An MTA worker ended up in the hospital with a broken jaw Tuesday after two people attacked him in a Long Island City subway station, according to police and transit officials.

The 54-year-old station maintenance supervisor was on the phone about 2 p.m. in the Queens Plaza station when two young men came up to him and punched him in the jaw, spokespeople for the NYPD and MTA told Patch.

The duo, one of whom was wielding a golf club, then fled onto a southbound M train, an MTA spokesperson said.

The man went to Mount Sinai Hospital with a swollen face and broken jaw.

“Assaulting a transit worker doing their part to keep New Yorkers safe in the middle of a pandemic is despicable," NYCT Interim President Sarah Feinberg said in a statement. "We're working with the NYPD as it searches for these perpetrators and will do everything we can to support prosecution to the fullest extent of the law."
