LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — A festival dedicated to sweet Italian holiday bread is coming to Queens for the first time ever this month — just in time for Christmas.

The inaugural Panettone Festival will take place from Dec. 9th to 12th and Dec. 16th to 19th at the courtyard in front of 52-41 Center Boulevard; part of a two-tower luxury development complex in Long Island City’s Hunters Point South.

Over a dozen “maestri pasticcieri” (master bakers) will sell specialty panettone at the festival, including breads baked with saffron, whiskey and chamomile or wine-soaked figs, in lieu of the traditional filling of candied fruits and raisins.

One of the Italian bakers who will be at the festival is Cristiano Rossi, whose cafe, Santa Chiara Café, is slated to open on the ground floor of 52-41 Center Boulevard early next year.

He said that the cafe will bring "a slice of Italian excellence to Long Island City," just as the Panettone Festival will bring "Italy's finest pastry chefs to the waterfront."

The Panettone Festival is free, but attendees have to pay to sample the panettone and other seasonal refreshments, including Italian-inspired chocolates and coffee.
