ASTORIA, QUEENS — A popular butcher shop in Astoria will celebrate its one-year anniversary with the community next month.

Prince Abou's Butchery will hold the celebration on Aug. 5 from 7 p.m. through midnight.

The shop, located at 32-88 Steinway St., has gained a name for itself for specializing in halal and pasture-raised farm-to-table foods as well as locally sourced vegetables, seasonings, and sauces after opening its doors in May 2022.

"It's gonna be a celebration for the people that have been shopping here for a year," Abou Sow, owner of the butchery, told Patch.

Sow acquired his skills after working inside his uncle's halal butcher shop in Jamaica, Queens. Years later, the Queens native got to know farmers and ranchers who supplied the animals for his uncle's shop to butcher.

Sow then opened his own online business, Prince Abou's Butchery, where he focused on processing and delivering fresh meats from a small facility in an Astoria start-up space.

Two years later, he opened up his brick-and-mortar shop, gaining recognition in Astoria as one of the best places to buy fresh meat.

"The community has truly embraced us," Sow said. "It's an honor and privilege to cut meat for the neighborhood."
