ASTORIA, QUEENS — Hoyt Playground will be a testing site for New York City’s latest installment of public toilets, which are set to be distributed across all five boroughs.

The metal-encased Portland Loo toilet, developed by an Oregon-based company, will be planted at the playground located at 1800 Hoyt Avenue N as part of the city’s pilot project to launch four other toilets at parks in each borough, according to several reports, including The CITY.

Hoyt Playground currently does not have a public restroom.

Each single-occupancy unit will have a toilet, a locking door, a hand wash station, an interior blue LED light, a baby changing table, and louvers for airflow, according to the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation.

The 9-feet tall loos are set to be installed at Irving Square Park in Brooklyn; Thomas Jefferson Park in Manhattan; Father Macris Park in Staten Island; and Joyce Kilmer Park in The Bronx.

“We developed these locations in conjunction with parks personnel in each borough, identifying areas where they knew the community was very anxious to have these toilets installed,” said Julie Fisher, Deputy Director of Architecture at NYC Parks.

The bathrooms will open as early as the summer of 2024, and toilets are expected to be maintained daily.
