Sing And Dance Along To 'Mamma Mia' At Athens Square Park In Astoria
Mamma mia, how can you resist it?
ASTORIA, NY — Mamma mia, how can you resist it? “Mamma Mia” will be screened in Astoria's Athens Square Park this month.
Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried star in the movie version of the ABBA-inspired Broadway musical, which will air 8:30 p.m. on July 17 at the park on the corner of 30th Avenue and 30th Street, organizers from the Parks Department and the Hellenic Film Society USA announced.
Jimmy DeMetro, president of the Hellenic Film Society USA, said the nonprofit decided to screen the film because Greek cinema deserves to be showcased in the American cultural landscape.

"‘Mamma Mia’ is not the type of film we typically show," admitted DeMetro. But, "it’s filmed on a Greek island and captures the Greek love of life and celebration."
The PG-13-rated "Mamma Mia" was filmed on the Greek island of Skopelos and also stars Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Christine Baranski.

The movie tells the story of Sophie (Seyfried), who discovers before her wedding that three men could be her father. Hijinks ensue as she invites them all to her wedding without telling her mother (Streep).
Viewers may bring chairs for their comfort and for further information, visit the Hellenic Film Society website or call (347) 934-9497.
“The audience," affirmed DeMetro, "will not be discouraged from singing along to the ABBA soundtrack."
