ASTORIA, QUEENS — Tiffany Cabán, whose 2019 insurgent campaign for Queens district attorney ended just dozens of votes away from besting the party pick, plans to run for the City Council seat representing Astoria when it becomes vacant next year, according to a news report.

The Astoria resident submitted a questionnaire seeking the endorsement of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America, City & State reported Thursday.

Cabán did not immediately respond to Patch's request for comment.

Monica Klein, a progressive political consultant who has worked for Cabán, and other Cabán allies declined City & State's requests for comment.

Cabán, a public defender, lost the Queens district attorney race to Melinda Katz by a 55-vote margin after a manual recount and legal challenges kept the tally in flux for six weeks.

Cabán's progressive campaign for the position as Queens' top prosecutor had won the endorsement of U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and U.S. Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

The seat, currently occupied by City Council Member Costa Constantinides, covers Astoria and parts of East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and Woodside. It will become up for grabs in 2021, when Constantinides is term-limited.

The position has already garnered a lineup of candidates, including Constantinides' chief of staff, Nick Roloson, who got the endorsement of his boss.

Other hopefuls include Queens organizer Jesse Cerrotti, who volunteered for Cabán's campaign; Stonewall Democratic Club President and Queens Community Board 1 member Rod Townsend; and Evie Hantzopoulos, a Queens Community Board 1 member and co-founder of Queens Feeds Hospitals.
