ASTORIA, QUEENS — Steinway Street already has its share of kebab spots, but an upcoming restaurant will add a decidedly different kind of sandwich to the mix: German-style doner kebab.

The matter-of-factly-named restaurant chain German Doner Kebab is opening an eatery at 31-75 Steinway St., in the former Baby Blue clothing store just north of Broadway and next to Chipotle.

It specializes in the legendary street food that originated in Turkey but took on a new life as a sandwich once it became popular in Berlin during the mid-20th century. The chain's menu includes a standard doner kebab sandwich, stuffed with meat and vegetables slathered in "secret sauces," as well as variations like veggie kebabs and wraps, and sides like fries and spring rolls.

German Doner Kebab did not respond to questions about when the location would open, though it is listed as "coming soon" on the company's website. There was no visible activity at the storefront Tuesday afternoon, though one neighborhood Reddit user has reported signage appearing in the window

The chain has existing locations in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Canada, Ireland, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates — plus a lone U.S. location in New Jersey. But it appears in the midst of a rapid American expansion, with five upcoming locations listed on its website from Texas to Brooklyn.
