Babylon HS Student Takes Part in National Grid Academy Program

Student gets hands-on experience with National Grid's systems.

A Babylon Junior-Senior High School student recently took part in the National Grid Engineering Pipeline Academy where he was given hands-on training and experience with the utility company.

Daniel Lum, the high schooler, learned how to join a polyethylene gas pipe together using fusion force pressure on a McElroy-14 machine during the academy's program.

The program is in its fourth year as a part of the utility's "Engineering Pipeline Program," a initiative designed to inspire young people to the world of engineering for the world of tomorrow.

More than 70 high school students from across New York State and the New England area in the National Grid coverage area took part in this year's program, which ran from July 15 to July 26.

“These students are able to met other high school students with the same interests, have some hands on experience and see what the challenges engineers have to work on every day,” said Ed Ruszkowski, Downstate Learning Development Regional Gas Manager National Grid.

The six-year program includes opportunities for paid internships, mentoring, job shadowing, networking opportunities and fast-track employment with National Grid.
