WEST BABYLON, NY —South Bay Cinemas, a long-time staple on Montauk Highway in West Babylon, may once again open its doors in 2022. The independent movie theater closed six years ago, after years of offering discount movies. Last week the owners announced that work has begun on a full renovation.

On Facebook, South Bay Cinemas announced that the theater could be open as soon as Easter 2022. Explaining the long delays of the theater's renovation, the business said the principal partner of the company died in 2020 after a long battle with cancer.

The cinema, at 495 W. Montauk Highway, originally began renovations in 2018, but they appeared to peter out and the site has been fenced off. The building is over 50 years old.

"I can confirm now that we have regrouped and are moving along. The hope is to be ready before Easter. It will still be five screens with all luxury recliner seating. As a matter of fact, the seats were purchased today. The interior will be all new."

The theater will begin offering food, beer and wine and be available for party rentals.

And the tradition of being a low-cost local alternative will continue.

"We will not nearly as expensive as Farmingdale or Deer Park," the business said.
