2 Dead In Wrong-Way Car Crash In West Babylon

The crash occurred on Wednesday morning, police say.

WEST BABYLON, NY — Two people are dead after wrong-way crash in West Babylon on Wednesday, Suffolk County police said.

A 63-year-old man was driving a 2005 Chevrolet at about 9:38 a.m. eastbound in the westbound lanes of Route 109, near Platt Avenue, when his vehicle struck a westbound 2021 BMW X3.

The 63-year-old man, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The passenger in the BMW, Fernando Goncalves, 79, of West Babylon, was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The 49-year-old driver of the BMW, 49, of Centereach, was also taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash caused westbound lanes to close. They have since been cleared, police said.

Police are investigating the incident.
