Off-Duty Detective Shoots Man Breaking Into His LI Home: Police

It happened early Saturday, police say.

WEST BABYLON, NY — An off-duty detective shot a man who was trying to burglarize his Long Island home early Saturday, police said.

According to Suffolk County police, a man was breaking into a home on 5th Avenue in West Babylon at about 3:30 a.m. when the homeowner, an NYPD detective, shot the man. The man, who police did not name, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

No other details have been released in the incident. No criminal charges have been filed.

The New York Post, citing unnamed sources, reported that the intruder, who did not have a gun, yelled, "I will kill you."

Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392.
