Electrical Utility Pole Catches Fire On LI: Police

An electric pole fire prompted a road closure on Montauk Highway, Suffolk police said.

WEST BABYLON, NY — An electrical utility pole caught fire Monday morning on Long Island causing a highway closure in the area, Suffolk police told Patch.

Police said they responded to a report of an electric pole fire on Montauk Highway, near Albermarle Avenue in West Babylon around 10 a.m. which caused a closure on eastbound Montauk Highway while PSEG responded, police said.

PSEG told Patch that upon arrival, crews "determined the fire had burned through the top of the pole."

At 10:43 a.m., an intentional outage was established so temporary repairs could be made, which "affected 571 customers for about 15 minutes," a PSEG rep said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, PSEG said.
