BABYLON, NY — July 10 is National Kitten Day, celebrated every year to "celebrate the cuddly warmth of a kitty" and inspire people to adopt a kitten from their local animal shelter, according to the National Day Calendar.

The Babylon Animal Shelter, which issued a plea for help calling on adoptive families earlier this week, is two cages away from reaching maximum capacity and currently has 60 adoptable kittens, according to longtime shelter volunteer Christine Franke.

Franke said the kittens are "waiting to find their forever homes."

"Many of the kittens are in foster care and waiting to be spayed and neutered," she added. "But there is an abundance of them that we hope can find a home in their early stages of life."

Franke said that adopting two kittens at once is "beneficial for their socialization, mental and physical well-being and can reduce the workload for the owner."

Benefits include learning from each other, keeping each other entertained and helping with tasks like litter box training, she added.

"They also provide comfort and companionship, especially when the owner is away," Franke said.
Normal adoption hours at the shelter are Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Shelter staff are also happy to train interested dog lovers, Franke said. There's also an abundance of bunnies, kittens, and cats to spend time with too.
