Lady Panthers Softball Wins Suffolk Class B Championship

Eighth-grader Gwen Donaldson leads offense with five RBIs in championship game.

The Babylon Varsity Softball team has made it three sports seasons in a row with one Suffolk County Championship team – the Panthers defeated the Center Moriches Red Devils 11-5 to win the Suffolk Class B title.

Eighth-grader Gwen Donaldson led the Panthers' offense with five RBIs against the Red Devils, including two during a six run eighth-inning that brought the number two seeded Babylon team ahead, according to Newsday.

"I'm really happy right now. I'm speechless," Donaldson told Newsday. "I've never been in a game like this before. We all believe in each other."

The Panthers led 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the final regulation inning in high school softball, before Babylon pitcher Alyssa Sasuk gave up a two-run double to tie the game. The pitcher worked her way out of a bases-loaded, no one out jam to keep the game tied.

The Lady Panthers then poured it on in the next frame, putting up six runs to finally put the Red Devils down for good.

The Panthers will play against Nassau Class B winner East Rockaway in the semi-regionals on Monday, June 3 at 4 p.m. at St. Joseph's College in Patchogue.
