New Business Spotlight: The Hesperus Nauticals

New village store appears to be a standard gift shop, but actually deals in reclaimed decor items.

A new Deer Park Avenue retail store has opened its doors: The Hesperus Nauticals is a unique collectibles purveyor. The brightly colored displays at first glance appear to be typical nautical and coastal-themed knick-knacks, but are actually reclaimed vintage items, mostly salvaged from ships.

West Babylon's Munira Khumri has been selling their boating antiques and collectibles for years out of a warehouse in Lindenhurst. Khumri explained that they do a mostly wholesale business to interior decorators of homes and restaurants.

The one-of-a-kind items include life preservers, cabin lamps, and an array of handmade miniature boats. Khumri runs the store while her husband works a full-time job in the city. She's optimistic about the potential her store has to fill a specialty niche and excited to add a bricks and mortar storefront to her succesful online business.

Wally's Coastal Treasures is only a few doors down, but their wares are actually very dissimilar, she noted.

"I've worked with Wally for years, and he sells more gifts and newer items. Almost everything I sell is vintage."
