'A Gentle, Beautiful Soul': Babylon's Pet Of The Week

BABYLON, NY — Lulu is a "gentle, beautiful soul" who resides at the Babylon Animal Shelter and she's Patch's Pet of the Week.

"Lulu came in as a stray, underweight and shy," longtime shelter volunteer Christine Franke told Patch. "We are trying to wrap our heads around why someone would let this girl loose. Immediately, we realized how special she was"

Frank said Lulu's a "dogo mix" around three years old and arrived at the shelter four days after Valentine's Day.

"Lulu is very sweet, and a little shy. Her epic tail shakes are her signal to how happy she is," said Ken Knowd, a shelter volunteer. "Her eyes say it all. She’s a gentle, beautiful soul."

For Franke, it's Lulu's "big heart" that makes her stand out. She's also friendly, an "easy walker," and appears to be dog-friendly.

"Lulu would make a great family companion," said a volunteer named Rich. "She will be an amazing and loving pet to any lucky adopter."

If Lulu doesn't seem like the perfect match for your family, the shelter has an endless array of adoptable dogs.

But adoption isn't the only option Franke said, adding that they're "desperate for experienced dog handlers."

"Please stop by and visit our overcrowded shelter," she said. "It could be a chance to meet your new best friend and all the love waiting for you!"

Franke said that shelter volunteers "make a huge difference by providing companionship to animals in need."

"Even if it is one to two hours a week, we will take it and the dogs will love you for it," she added.

Normal adoption hours at the shelter are Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Shelter staff are also happy to train interested dog lovers, Franke said. There's also an abundance of bunnies, kittens, and cats to spend time with.
