BABYLON, NY — "St. Patty" arrived at the Babylon Animal Shelter on St. Patrick's Day and she's Patch's Pet of the Week.

According to shelter staff, Patty is about 1 to 2 years old, loves to play fetch, walks nicely on a leash, obeys basic commands, appreciates cuddles and back scratches.

"Patty is sweet and friendly to all. She is just so playful and dog friendly," longtime shelter volunteer Christine Franke told Patch.

Like any dog living the shelter life while waiting for its forever family, Franke said Patty gets "super" happy when she gets time out of her kennel.

"Patty has a smile that will warm your heart and also a big and bright personality to match that awesome smile," Franke said. "A little game of fetch and a walk is all that is required to ease her stress of shelter life and make her day."

Anyone interested in making Patty a part of the family can come visit her at the shelter during adoption hours, Monday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

If Patty isn't the right fit for your family, there are plenty of other animals looking for love at the shelter, which is maxed out at full capacity.

"These are very scary times for all the dogs. We are pleading with our community to take a chance and meet your new best friend," she said.

The shelter is also hosting a pet adoption and wine tasting at Village Vines in Babylon Village on Saturday, April 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

"Come take a chance on raffles, sip some delicious wine and meet a couple of our amazing adoptable dogs," Franke said.

But adoption isn't the only option, she said, adding that they're "desperate for experienced dog handlers."

"Even if it is one to two hours a week, we will take it and the dogs will love you for it," Franke said.

Shelter staff are also happy to train interested dog lovers, Franke said.

There's also an abundance of bunnies, kittens, and cats to spend time with, too.
