Pet Of The Week: Sweet Stanley Is An 'Excellent Family Dog'

BABYLON, NY — Sweet Stanley is a "loving and friendly" American Bully who resides at the Babylon Animal Shelter and he's Patch's Pet of the Week.

"He has short legs and a big heart," said longtime shelter volunteer Christine Franke.

Stanely is between one and two years old and is very loving and dog-friendly, she added.

But although he manages to keep smiling, Stanley hasn't had an easy life.

"Stanley’s owner was homeless and living in a shed behind a business where he was tethered to a tree," Franke told Patch.

Still, she says Stanley is staying hopeful that he'll have another chance at a real home and family.

And according to the United Kennel Club, Stanley was born and bred to be "an excellent family dog."

In fact, the organization says: "The American Bully breed is, first and foremost, a companion, exhibiting confidence with a zest and exuberance for life.

"Despite its powerful appearance, their demeanor is gentle and friendly. This breed makes an excellent family dog.

"The ideal American Bully possesses the athleticism to do well in performance events. Aggressive behavior towards humans is uncharacteristic of the breed."

With Valentine's Day a week away, Franke says she hopes some shelter dogs will get the love they deserve through adoption.

"To be honest, it’s a very sad and stressful time because we have a completely full shelter," she said.

But adoption isn't the only option she said, adding that they're "desperate for experienced dog handlers."

"Even if it is one to two hours a week, we will take it and the dogs will love you for it," Franke said.

Normal adoption hours at the shelter are Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Shelter staff is also happy to train interested dog lovers, Franke said. There's also an abundance of bunnies, kittens, and cats to spend time with too.
