Surfer Dies At Long Island Beach: Police

A man was pulled from the water after an apparent drowning at a Long Island beach where he was surfing, Suffolk County police say.

BABYLON, NY — A man died while surfing at a Long Island on Sunday, according to Suffolk County police.

Marine Bureau officers responded to Gilgo Beach after a good Samaritan pulled an unresponsive surfer from the water around 2:20 p.m., police said.

Jack Shapiro, 54, of Holbrook, was pulled to shore where CPR was initiated, and transported via ambulance to Good Samaritan University Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Police said the cause of death will be determined by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office and Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the death.
