Ex-department chief has served the area for over 40 years.

A West Babylon firefighter who has served the community for over 40 years has been elected to serve as a board trustee for the Firemen's Association of the State of New York (FASNY) Firemen’s Home.
Jerry Owenberg, who has been fighting fires since he was 20 in 1970, will serve a five-year term for the Firemen's Home, a specialized residential healthcare facility for retired volunteer firefighters in upstate New York.
Owenberg has been a member of Rainbow Hose Company 1, serving as a Lieutenant in 1973 before moving to Mastic for six years. He moved back to West Babylon, however, in 1978 and became a member of the West Babylon Fire Department again.
In his time in West Babylon, Owenberg has served as a Chief Driver, Lieutenant, Captain and the current Treasurer of Rainbow Hose Company 1. In 1992, he was made Third Assistant Chief before becoming Chief of the Department in 1998.
He has also served as a part of the West Babylon Rescue Squad as an EMT.
His full-time job also had him serving our area – working for the Town of Babylon Highway Department for 32 years, he climbed the ranks from laborer to General Supervisor.
Owenberg is married to his wife Ellen of 43 years and have had three children together they have raised in West Babylon.
