W. Babylon's Sam Rush Leads UMass Lax to Championship

Local graduate leds UMass to fifth straight Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse championship.

West Babylon High School graduate Sam Rush led her women's lacrosse team with six goals and seven points, bringing the university it's record fifth-straight Atlantic 10 championship in a game against Duquesne on Sun., April 28.

Rush led the charge for the UMass Minutemen with their Offensive Player of the Year out, scoring a key goal that gave her team an 8-4 lead.

According to The Massachusetts Daily Collegian, her score was the go-ahead goal in an eventual 14-7 win for the NCAA Division I team.

Her play in the game earned her the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award.

“The season was on the line, the championship was on the line and we came to play,” Rush told the Daily Collegian. “I was just happy I could step up. I wanted to win the game and if that involved me scoring goals, then so be it. It was really more about the win.”

The win for the Minutemen, now 17-2 on the season, propels them into an automatic berth for the NCAA Tournament. The team finds out its next opponent during a selection ceremony this weekend.
