West Babylon Third Graders Celebrate Thanksgiving With Balloon Engineering Project

Third graders paraded student-designed balloons through Santapogue Elementary in a Thanksgiving project inspired by Balloons Over Broadway.

WEST BABYLON, NY— Third graders at Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District creatively celebrated Thanksgiving, using engineering, art, and literacy to explore the history behind one of the holiday’s most iconic traditions.

Students read Balloons Over Broadway, the story of Tony Sarg — the inventive puppeteer who designed the first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons — and discussed how his creativity transformed the event into the spectacle millions watch each year.

Inspired by Sarg’s work, students designed and built their own parade balloons, applying lessons in problem-solving, artistry, and storytelling. The activity culminated in the school’s second annual “Balloons Over Broadway” parade on Nov. 25, as students marched their handmade creations through the hallways.
