Man Brandishing Sword Shot And Tased By Officers On Long Island: Police

A man brandishing a sword was shot by officers after they responded to a 911 call reporting a hostage situation on Long Island, police say.

NORTH BAY SHORE, NY — A man armed with a sword was shot by Suffolk County police officers on Long Island Tuesday afternoon, according to Suffolk County police.

Police said they responded to a 911 call reporting a hostage being held on Ohio Avenue in North Bay Shore around 1:26 p.m.

When officers arrived, Joseph Restaino, 33, a resident of the home, threatened them by brandishing a long sword and refusing commands to drop the weapon, police said.

Police said they deployed a Taser and demanded Restaino drop the sword, but the Taser was not effective and he did not comply.

At least one officer discharged their weapon and struck Restaino, police said. He was injured and transported via ambulance to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, police said.

There were no hostages in the home, police said.
