Wrench Used As Murder Weapon In Fatal Assault On LI: DA

A Long Island man has been charged with murder after using a lug wrench to kill another man on the street, the DA says.

BAY SHORE, NY — A Long Island man has been charged with murder after allegedly using a lug wrench to kill another man, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney.

Ricardo Siguenza, 32, of Bay Shore, was indicted for second-degree murder for fatally striking 44-year-old Carlos Edenilson Cabrera Alvarez, of Brentwood, on the head with a lug wrench, the DA said.

"The brazen violence alleged here is inexplicable and will not be tolerated in Suffolk County," Tierney said. "As with any homicide, we will vigorously prosecute and bring justice for the victim."

According to the investigation, on Feb. at around 6:47 p.m., Cabrera Alvarez was walking eastbound on Main Street in Bay Shore and Siguenza was walking westbound on Main Street carrying a large lug wrench by his side. As the two men walked toward each other and got closer, Siguenza allegedly reached back with his right hand, swung the wrench and struck Cabrera Alvarez in the head, the DA said.

The DA said Cabrera Alvarez stumbled forward and fell to the ground while Siguenza walked away. Siguenza continued walking around Bay Shore until about 12:50 a.m. when he tried to enter the Goody Two Shoes Bar on Main Street where the door was locked, but several employees still in the bar recognized him from a surveillance video depicting the attack that had been shared with local bar owners earlier that night, the DA said.

One of the bar’s employees called 911, Suffolk police responded and shortly after arrested Siguenza as he was walking down Main Street, the DA said. At the time of his arrest, he was still in possession of the lug wrench that he allegedly had used to strike Cabrera Alvarez, the DA said. The DA said it remains unknown if the two knew each other.

Cabrera Alvarez was transported to South Shore University Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and placed on life support, but never regained consciousness and died on March 11, the DA said.

On April 11, Siguenza was arraigned before Acting Supreme Court Justice Anthony S. Senft, Jr. for second-degree murder, a Class A felony, the DA said. Senft ordered Siguenza remanded during the pendency of the case and he is due back in court on May 2 facing 25 years to life in prison if convicted on the top count, the DA said. He is being represented by George Duncan who was not immediately available for comment.
