Rally Planned On Sunday At City Hall For Co-op Property Tax Relief

Councilman Mark Weprin, D-Oakland Gardens, founder of the City Council Co-op and Condo caucus, will stand with other local officials, co-op shareholders, and co-op board members and presidents from eastern Queens to protest the outrageous increases in real property tax assessments on co-ops and condos.

The rally and press conference will take place on Sunday, May 1 at 2 p.m. on the steps of City Hall.

Since the city Department of Finance released its real property tax assessments earlier this year, there has been considerable angst on the part of Queens co-op and condo boards. When the DOF changed the valuation methods, some co-ops saw their valuations rise by as much as 150 percent, at a time when property values are basically flat.

The City Council will hold hearings on the issue on May 2; the May 1 rally will demonstrate, in advance of the hearings, the seriousness of the matter and the level of concern that co-op and condo residents are feeling.
