Bayside Gears Up For St. Patrick’s Day Parade Despite ‘Tough Economy’

"This year has been a little tough with the economy to get sponsorships as well as donations," the parade's committee president said.

BAYSIDE, QUEENS —Bayside is getting ready to march down Bell Boulevard for a beloved Irish celebration. But hold onto your shamrocks, the St. Patrick's Day Parade isn't until March 25.

Francis McLoughlin, president of Bayside’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee, told Patch that more than 70 groups will march down the street starting at 1 p.m. next Saturday to celebrate Irish heritage in the neighborhood.

But inflation also seems to be hindering the luck of the Irish.

“This year has been a little tough with the economy to get sponsorships as well as donations,” McLoughlin said. “They're down a little bit this year.”

Still, the president said that the committee managed to raise funds for the parade to take place, as well as donate about $8,000 to several community groups in Bayside.

The committee has raised funds through events like a dinner dance held last month with an open bar, a musical performance, and food.

Civic associations, the Bayside Little League, and several businesses are among the groups marching down Bell Boulevard this Saturday.

A mass will take place at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10 am., following an Irish breakfast at Monahan & Fitzgerald.
