Bayside Library Wins Queens Title In Citywide Display Contest
The display depicts NYC institutions that are free with Culture Pass, an initiative that gives library cardholders free access to the sites.

BAYSIDE, QUEENS — A display featuring New York City landmarks and corresponding books won Bayside's public library a borough-wide title in a citywide contest.
The Bayside branch of the Queens Public Library was among 130-plus library branches across the city's three systems to enter a display contest last month hosted by Culture Pass, an initiative that gives library cardholders access to cultural institutions.
After nearly 8,000 votes from residents across all five boroughs of New York were cast, and a panel of expert judges convened, the Bayside library's "Autumn in New York" display tied for first place in the Queens Public Library system. The Hillcrest branch's display also came in first.

The Bayside branch's display matched books with miniaturized depictions of New York City Culture Pass destinations, including an array of parks and museums.
"From enjoying the foliage while taking a stroll through Queens Botanical Gardens to going on a date night at the MET, autumn truly is the kick-off to a beautiful holiday season in the best city in the world," Bayside library staff wrote. "What better way to enjoy the big apple than utilizing all the benefits the Culture Pass gives us?"

The contest's overall best-of-show title went to the Hudson Park library in Greenwich Village for its rotating diorama, which also featured scenes from Culture Pass destinations, like the MoMa and New York Botanical Garden. The branch, which is part of the New York Public Library System, won $1,500 to support programming and "bragging rights," as part of its best-of-show title.
Brendan Cain, Culture Pass' program manager, said that above all the contest celebrates the work of library staff.
"Library staff around the city bring so much creativity and ingenuity to their work, day in and day out, but they don't get many chances to stand in the spotlight," he said.
