City Launches Effort To Link Central, Northeast Queens Parks

BAYSIDE, QUEENS — The city is mulling plans to build a miles-long greenway that would connect four parks across Central and Northeast Queens.

The parks and transportation departments on Thursday announced the launch of a conceptual planning study for a greenway from Flushing Meadows Corona Park through Kissena Park, Cunningham Park, Alley Pond Park and connecting to the Joe Michaels Mile along Little Neck Bay, according to a news release.

Safe-streets advocacy groups like the Eastern Queens Greenway have long advocated for such a trail.

“Now more than ever, access to quality open space is essential for all New Yorkers,” NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver said in a statement. “By creating a continuous path of scenic routes, this project will connect surrounding communities and enhance the pedestrian and cyclist experience in Brooklyn and Queens for years to come.”

The study, with its accompanying public input process, is the first step toward making the greenway a reality.

Queens residents will be able to hear more about the project and provide feedback during a virtual meeting scheduled for the evening of Nov. 16
