Harmful Product Drop-Off Site Reopens For Queens Residents

New Yorkers can go to the city-operated drop-off site in northeast Queens and safely dispose of potentially harmful household items.

COLLEGE POINT, QUEENS — The city is helping New Yorkers dispose of potentially harmful household items at a northeast Queens drop-off site for the first time since the pandemic.

Motor oil, latex paint, and objects containing mercury are among the items that residents can drop off at the Department of Sanitation's (DSNY) District 7 garage, located at 30th Avenue between 120th and 122nd Streets in College Point.

The Queens drop-off site is one of five such drop-off sites spread among the city's five boroughs.

The sites are open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as of July 10, as well as the last Friday of the month, barring severe weather or a holiday.

In a news statement, Sanitation Commissioner Edward Grayson described the sites as "very popular," adding that he is grateful that they are now reopening.

“We all have a responsibility to dispose of these items the right way, for the safety of our City, our employees, and the environment. We are thankful that we were able to receive the funding needed to reopen these sites," he said.

Batteries, electronics, fluorescent tubes, and thermostats are among the other items you can bring to the city's Special Waste Drop-Off Sites. However, there are some items that you cannot bring, including cleaning products, appliances, gasoline, medical waste, oil-based paint, and more.

Also, the drop-off sites are only for non-commercial materials brought by city residents. Anyone who shows up in a car or on foot will need to bring a photo ID and proof of residency, like a valid New York State driver's license, or a picture ID and a phone bill.
