Kupferberg Center to Debut Exhibit on Concentration Camp Liberators

Queensborough Community College’s Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives will debut an exhibit on the American liberators of the Nazi death camps on Oct. 13.

The display, which will open at 1 p.m., documents the American armed forces’ liberation of concentration camps, such as Buchenwald and Dachau, as witnessed by soldiers.

The exhibit, “Their Brother’s Keepers,” uses the liberator’s own words to tell the story, illustrating, in the words of Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel, “the cruelty of the killers, the cowardice of the bystanders, the brutality of the collaborators, the desperate faith of the believers, the solitude of the condemned, the magnificent bravery of the liberators.”

The opening night of the exhibit will include first-person account presentations Irving Roth, a Dachau survivor, and Rick Carrier, who helped to liberate Buchenwald.

“As a daughter of one of the American liberators, I am thankful for the actions of these brave soldiers who saved the lives of countless thousands of Jews who endured horrific enslavement and torture in concentration camps,” said Queensborough President Diane Call, whose father, Sgt. Charles Francis Bova, liberated captives at Dachau in 1945.
