19-Year-Old Arrested In Death Of Brooklyn Cyclist Adam Uster: NYPD

BED-STUY, NY — A 19-year-old motorist was arrested Tuesday related to the death of Crown Heights cyclist Adam Uster, according to the NYPD.
Angel Mejia, 19, of Staten Island, faces two counts of failing to yield to a bicycle related to the fatal crash on Lexington and Franklin avenues on May 1, police said.
Uster, a 39-year-old father and safe streets advocate, was crossing Franklin and Lexington avenues when he was struck by a truck turning right, according to the NYPD.

He had been traveling southbound in a designated bike lane on Franklin Avenue, police said.
He was transported to an area hospital and later pronounced dead.

"Adam's loss is a loss for all of New York City," friend Isaac Zal told Patch in May. "He's the best a person could be."
Uster's death reignited calls for safer bike infrastructure in Brooklyn — Uster's death was entirely preventable, according to safe streets advocates Transportation Alternatives.
Uster was, at the time, the thirteenth cyclist to be killed in a traffic collision in 2023, according to Transportation Alternatives.
So far in 2023, nine pedestrians and cyclists had been injured or killed on Franklin Avenue between Bergen Street and Greene Avenue, according to NYC Crash Mapper.
Advocates emphasized statistics were not abstract, but represented meaningful human lives.
"Adam is not a statistic," said Executive Director Danny Harris. "These are not numbers.
