Attempted Reagan Assassin John Hinckley Jr. To Play Brooklyn Concert

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — A man who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981 will start his "Redemption" musical tour in Brooklyn next month, according to the concert listing.

John Hinckley Jr. — who was recently found “no longer a danger to himself or others” after decades in a mental hospital — will perform on July 8 at the Market Hotel, which is found on Myrtle Avenue less than a block from the Bed-Stuy border.

The show, which he advertises as part of a "Redemption Tour," comes after a judge confirmed last week that Hinckley would be granted full freedom on June 15.

The 67-year-old has been living in Virginia under restrictions since his 2016 release from a mental hospital, which he had been confined to since a jury found him not guilty by reason of insanity for shooting at the president, according to the Associated Press.

"A big thank you to everyone who helped me get my unconditional release, What a long strange trip it has been," he wrote on Twitter after the judge's decision. "Now it’s time to rock and roll."

Hinckley has said he will perform 17 original songs at the Brooklyn show.

He has already released a single "Long Lost Yesterday" on YouTube and has tour dates lined up in Connecticut and Chicago in the weeks after his New York City kick-off.

The 1981 attempted assassination of Reagan was fueled by Hinckley's obsession with the movie "Taxi Driver," where the main character attempts to kill a presidential candidate, according to AP.

Judges have found that Hinckley has shown no signs of active mental illness since the mid-1980s, the outlet reports, including no violent behavior or interest in weapons.
