Bathroom Set To Open At Bed-Stuy Subway Station

BED-STUY, NY — A Bed-Stuy subway station's bathrooms will sparkle and shine when they reopen in July with much-needed upgrades, city officials announced Monday.

Bed-Stuy's J- and Z-line station on Myrtle Avenue and Broadway will reopen its men's and women's bathrooms starting Monday, remaining open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with daily cleaning between 12-1 p.m., according to the MTA.

The station's two bathrooms will reopen with a number of upgrades, including motion activated faucets, hand dryers, new lighting and paint, tile grouting and deep cleaning.

"Reopening bathrooms is another way for New York City Transit to provide customers relief when they have to go on the go for a more comfortable experience in the subway,” NYC Transit President Richard Davey said in a statement.

The Bed-Stuy station is one of 18 stations across the city scheduled to reopen in early July, another step in a phased process to reopen the NYC subway system's 133 bathrooms at 69 stations by Sept. 4, according to Gothamist and the MTA.

All subway bathrooms were shut during COVID-19 due to a shortage of cleaners — but stalls have already reopened at 24 stations citywide, according to Gothamist and the MTA.

Despite getting a revamp, the hours were reduced on the public toilets, which used to remain open from 5 a.m. to 12 a.m., according to Gothamist.

In total, NYC's subway station includes 133 bathrooms in 69 stations, Gothamist reported.
