BED-STUY, NY — The Bed Stuy fire that killed a mother and her two daughters Friday was caused by "cooking carelessness" and an absent fire alarm, according to Gothamist.

Danielle Havens, 48, and her daughters Journee Miles, 11, and Keslee Miles, 9, were killed Friday morning in a fire at their apartment at 587 Gates Ave., according to NYPD.

In a since-deleted Tweet, FDNY that there was no smoke alarm in the apartment and chalked the fire up to carelessness in the kitchen, according to reports.

Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh confirmed on Friday the fire had originated in the apartment's kitchen. Earlier on Friday, Kavanagh had said there was a hard-wired smoke alarm present but authorities were investigating whether it was working.

"As you can see, this is an incredible tragedy for this neighborhood — for this family," Kavanagh said.

Neighbors told Gothamist Havens was a loving parent and the kids were a "treasure." The three were living at the Bed-Stuy apartment for under a year.

"She loved those kids," a neighbor told Gothamist.

The fire ripped through the third floor apartment Friday about 5:05 a.m. All three were transported to an area hospital, where they were later declared dead, according to NYPD.

Firefighters responded within minutes, but the fire was already "very advanced" and had likely been burning for some time, according to Kavanagh.

"I am heartbroken to hear that a mother and her two precious daughters lost their lives today after a fire broke out in their Brooklyn home," Mayor Eric Adams said in a Tweet. "Our prayers are with the family's loved ones and this community."

Neighbors on Saturday put prayer candles outside the apartment and mourned the family's loss, according to ABC7.
