Bed-Stuy Bodega Fatal Shooting: Suspect Held Without Bail

23-year-old Maurice Hennegan from Bed-Stuy is set to appear in court on Feb. 24, the Brooklyn District Attorney's office said.

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — Bed-Stuy man Maurice Hennegan, who was arrested on Friday in connection with the fatal September shooting of 38-year-old Neil Thompson in a Bed-Stuy bodega, was taken into custody without bail, the Brooklyn DA's office said. Hennegan, 23, was charged with murder in the second degree, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the criminal complaint from the Brooklyn DA's office. He is due back in court on Feb. 24, according to a spokesperson from the Brooklyn DA's office.

A witness who was standing next to Thompson during the shooting told police that he saw Hennegan shoot Thompson in the hand, according to the complaint. Surveillance video caught Hennegan firing a shot toward Thompson inside 3 Stars Deli and Grocery at 164 Tompkins Ave. at around 7:24 a.m. on Sept. 28, the complaint said. Thompson's death was caused by multiple gunshot wounds to the body, according to results from the medical examiner's office.

Hennegan was arrested on Feb. 16 at around 5:25 p.m. at 32 Varet St. in East Williamsburg, according to the criminal complaint. He resisted arrest, ran away and flailed his arms, cops said. Later that night at around midnight, police recovered crack cocaine from Hennegan after they had detained him at the 79th precinct, according to the complaint.

On Sept. 28 police responded to a 911 call at the deli and found Thompson as well as a 64-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his torso, according to the NYPD. The 64-year-old victim's name was not revealed, and he was taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition, police said.
