Bed-Stuy's 462 Halsey Community Garden Wants Your Compost

Garden staff want community members to come by this Saturday afternoon with compost and learn more about the operation.

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — This Saturday, 462 Halsey Community Garden is collecting compost, and staff want community members to come by from 11 - 1 p.m. to find out more about the garden and see if they'd be interested in events, activities or grocery purchasing there. The garden opens for the spring season in April and offers a Fresh Food Box program at the Farmers Market every Saturday.

Fresh Food Box customers can buy a weekly $12 box that's worth $20-$30 in the store, according to the volunteers that work at the garden. Plus, the program accepts SNAP/EBT and Health Bucks.

Vegetables are sold on a sliding scale basis based on a customer's income. The rates are $1 - $5 for almost all the vegetables, and customers choose what they pay within that range. Here is what garden staff suggest customers pay based on their income, and customers are able to pay different amounts each week depending on their financial situation:
