Beloved Bed-Stuy Dance School Asase Yaa Announces Major Expansion

The African dance school's new space features three new, state-of-the-art dance studios, a music room and a community lounge.

BED-STUY, NY — Beloved Brooklyn dance institution Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation is beginning its 13th year in a brand new space in Bed-Stuy.

The Asase Yaa School of the Arts' new space features three new, state-of-the-art dance studios, a music room and a community lounge.

The school, now located in Bed-Stuy at 506 Macdonough Street, will open for the school year on Oct. 4.

The nonprofit's new location has more room for instructors to teach various dance styles, including ballet, modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop, Caribbean folklore, drum styles, Djembe, Afro-Cuban, buckets, and several African dance styles.

"I am beyond excited about welcoming our returning and new students to our spacious new home and adding nine amazing teaching artists to our staff,” Zakiya Harris, the school's artistic director, said.

The school’s dance and drum programs are offered to students ages 3-18.

This year's theme is "Black Dance Is..." to remind students how Black dance traditions have influenced dance culture worldwide.

“Can't wait to see the magic unfold for our 2024-25 season!" Harris said.
