The focus of Wilson's attention in "Fences" is Troy, who struggles with providing for his family and with his obsession of cheating death. Troy was a great baseball player in his youth, but this was before the major leagues had broken the color barrier.
Thus, he was not able to earn a decent living nor save money for the future. He lived a menial life along with his wife, Rose, plus two sons named Lyons (from a previous marriage who does not live in his house) and Cory (who still lives in the house at the play's opening). Bono is his best friend and Gabriel is his brother.

The fence referred to by the play's title is an uncompleted fence in Troy's yard. It is not revealed during the first act why Troy wants to build it.
However, there is a dramatic monologue in the second act that alludes to the fence serving as a metaphor for a barrier to death. As it turns out, the fence is not completed within the course of the story, and also, Troy does not live to the play's conclusion.
