Early Morning Fire Rips Through Brownstone on Monroe Street

A two-alarm fire ripped through the top floor of three-story brownstone at 229A Monroe Street early Friday morning, sending one person leaping from the second floor in an attempt to escape the flames.

Twelve units were called at approximately 12:39 a.m. when the fire ignited at the building located on Monroe St and Nostrand Ave.

An additional 13 units were called to the scene—106 firemen total— as the fire continued to rage and several of the tenants, including children, had to be rescued, reported fire inspectors.

The fire was brought under control after about an hour, at around 1:35 a.m.

There were no reported fatalities. Four tenants and two firefighters were transported to Woodhull Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Fire inspectors are still investigating the cause.
