Major Crime Dropped In 2 Bed-Stuy Precincts Last Month: Data

Major crime stats dropped in June in Bed-Stuy's 79th and 81st Precincts, leading the city's overall decline, according to police data.

BED-STUY, NY — Two Bed-Stuy precincts saw a drop in violent crime in June, outpacing the citywide drop of an average 4 percent.

In the NYPD's 79th precinct, which covers the western portion of the neighborhood west of Marcus Garvey Boulevard, saw all major crimes decrease by 13.7 percent in June compared to the year before.

The biggest drop was felony assault and burglary, which both dropped by 33.3 percent. Auto theft dropped by 20 percent, while robberies, murders and grand larcenies increased, data show.

The June decrease offers a break from an otherwise slight jump in major crime reports this year in the 79th precinct. Major crimes for the first half of 2023 were up 1.45 percent compared to the first half of 2022, data show.

The numbers were equally promising in the 81st Precinct east of Marcus Garvey, where major crime reports decreased by 12 percent last month.

In June, the 81st Precinct saw decreases in murder, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and auto theft. At the same time, the area saw a an increase in robbery.

So far in 2023, major crime in the 81st Precinct was down 11.1 percent compared to the first half of 2022.

Shootings — which aren't included in the major crimes tally —significantly dropped in June in the 81st Precinct but increased in the 79th.

Over the last 30 years, crime has significantly dropped across the area and across NYC. Between 2001 and 2022, major crimes dropped by over 20 percent in both precincts.

Across the city, major crimes dropped in June by an average 4 percent with some areas — like the Upper East Side — seeing drops over 10 percent.

The citywide trend downward is a welcomed sign of relief after major crimes increased in 2022 compared to 2021, though the Daily News reports many New Yorkers still experience significant fear of violent crimes.
