BED-STUY, NY — Bed-Stuy’s streets got a bit safer in October, with violent crime falling in two precincts alongside the city’s nearly 6 percent decline.

In the NYPD’s 79th Precinct, which covers the western portion of Bed-Stuy west of Marcus Garvey Boulevard, all major crimes fell 4.35 percent in October compared with the same month last year.

Rape saw the most dramatic decrease, plunging 66.7 percent, while felony assault dropped 25.7 percent, data show. Not all crime was down, however—auto theft surged 57.1 percent, and both burglaries and grand larcenies also rose, highlighting ongoing challenges in the neighborhood despite overall declines.

The drop in October provides a brief respite from an overall uptick in major crimes in the 79th Precinct this year. So far in 2025, major crime reports are up 5.72 percent compared with the same period in 2024, according to NYPD data.

The numbers were similarly encouraging in the 81st Precinct, which covers the area east of Marcus Garvey Boulevard, where major crime reports fell 5 percent in October. Rape, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, and robbery all declined, while the precinct saw a rise in auto theft, according to NYPD data.

Year-to-date, major crime in the 81st Precinct is down 7.82 percent compared with the same period in 2024, continuing the precinct’s trend of overall improvement.

Shootings, which aren’t counted in the major crimes total, remained steady in October in both the 79th and 81st precincts.

Over the past two decades, crime has fallen sharply across New York City, including in the 79th and 81st precincts, where major crimes have dropped more than 20 percent since 2010, according to NYPD data.
