BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — An 82-year-old man was found dead inside his Bed-Stuy home by medics who reported the Bed-Stuy building was shaking, according to police and city records.

Emergency responders conducting a wellness check found Dwight Dates unconscious in his Decatur Street home, between Patchen and Ralph avenues, about 1 p.m. Wednesday, according to police and fire officials.

Dates was pronounced dead at the scene and another person was rushed to the hospital, fire officials said.

Police and fire officials did not respond to a request for details about the person's injuries or condition.

Minutes after the wellness check, medics called in the fire department to check on the stability of the house, which was "shaking" or "vibrating," according to FDNY and Department of Building records.

Department of Building inspectors — who were also sent to the three-story home — weren't able to explore inside given "excessive household debris," but were able to determine the building was stable, a spokesperson said.

A vacate order was issued to 486A Decatur St. along with a violation to the owner for not maintaining the property, which is to be sealed for public safety, the DOB said.

If the owner does not comply, city contractors will be brought in to seal the home, the spokesperson said.

Records show limited liability company Decatur Stones bought the two-family home for $980,000 in July 2021 and were slapped with a $5,000 fine four months later for unsafe construction conditions.
