PHOTOS: The Boombox Exhibition

The House of Art Gallery held its opening reception for an exhibit that pays tribute to the boombox, an iconic instrument of the 70s and 80s music era.

On Thursday, April 12, The House of Art Gallery, held its VIP opening reception for, "The Boombox Exhibition."

The concept of The Boombox Exhibition is to demonstrate the influence of the boombox through various facets from the 70s to mid-80s, such as fashion, music and politics.

The boombox was once an intrinsic part of incubating so much sonic New York history. In pulling together this study, art-goers will get a chance to see, live and embrace a device that was part of the fabric of the city.

Artists showing at The Boombox Exhibit include Lyle Owerko, Jamel Shabazz, Justin Bua, Frank Morrison, Dan Ericson, Najee Dorsey, Charlotta Janssen, Jas Knight and Phyllis Stephens.

Ralph McDaniels, founder of Video Music Box, was honored for his early and lasting contribution to increasing the presence and appreciation of hip hop music and culture in New York City and beyond.

The Boombox exhibit will run at House of Art Gallery, located at 408 Marcus Garvey Boulevard, from April 12 - June 9, 2013.
