Police Blotter: Bed-Stuy Reeling from 4th of July Shooting Spree
Six different people shot on Independence Day in the 79th Precinct alone

The crime statistic is unchanged (44 incidents versus 44 incidents) in the 79th Precinct for the week of June 18 – June 24. For the month, crime is up 21 percent (185 incidents versus 153) for the 28-day period, compared to last year. Year to date, crime is up 19 percent (935 incidents versus 789 incidents), compared to this same time period in 2011.
Four Shootings:
On Wednesday, July 4, at approximately 10:42 p.m., a 20-year-old man was shot in the back in front of 536 Putnam Avenue, between Throop Ave and Marcus Garvey Blvd. According to police, the victim was shot by an unknown perpetrator while standing in front of the above location. He was transported via ambulance to Kings County Hospital in stable condition. The 79th Precinct Detective Squad is investigating the incident.

On Wednesday, July 4, at approximately 11:15 p.m., four people were shot and injured in front of 505 Gates Avenue, between Marcy and Tompkins avenues. The victims are described as a 24-year-old male, who was shot in the once in the right thigh; a 19-year-old female, who was shot once in the right shoulder; a 16-year-old female, who was shot once in the right leg; and 36-year-old man who was driving his car was grazed in the head by the shattered glass from his rear window. All victims were transported via ambulance to Kings County Hospital in stable condition. The 79th Precinct Detective Squad is investigating the incident.
On Wednesday, July 4, at approximately 8:30 p.m., a man was shot in his right thigh by an unknown person in front of 294 Nostrand Avenue, on the corner of Lafayette Avenue. According to police reports, the victim, 22, was walking to the store when he thought he heard fireworks and then realized he had been shot. The victim was taken to Woodhull Hospital and is in stable condition. The 79th Precinct Detective Squad is investigating the incident.

On Thursday, July 5, at approximately 1:00 a.m., a 27-year-old man was shot in his left hand by a stray bullet in front of 315 Putnam Avenue, between Nostrand and Marcy avenues. According to police reports, the victim was on Putnam Avenue when he heard a small popping noise and noticed he was bleeding from his hand. He walked to his friend’s house to wash his hand and proceeded to go to hospital when he had swelling in his hand. The checked himself into Woodhull Hospital and is in stable condition. The 79th Precinct Detective Squad is investigating the incident.
