Restoration Plaza Garage Vacated After Fatal Fidi Facility Collapse

BED STUY, NY — The Restoration Plaza parking garage was partially shut down for structural issues about a week after a Financial District parking garage collapsed and fatally crushed a worker inside, city records show.

The Bed-Stuy garage at 1368 Fulton St. received a partial vacate order on May 1 for issues that include a broken concrete ceiling, corroded steel reinforcements, brick walls without mortar and plumbing leaks, city records show.

A 20- by 40-foot portion of the garage was closed, city records show.

The Bed Stuy garage is one of seven vacated since the dramatic Manhattan collapse on April 18, according to Gothamist, which first reported the vacate order.

The garage shares space with beloved clothing store Moshood, which moved into Bed Stuy in 2019 after being priced out of Fort Greene. Beyond the unstable 800-square-foot portion of the garage, the property remains open as usual, a Department of Buildings spokesperson told Patch.

The building has tallied up up over 100 violations from the Department of Buildings since 1942, records show. Recent violations reveal rusted metal beams and leaks throughout the garage.

The property was hit with a $12,500 fine for failing to address "structurally deficient conditions" in November, 2022, which is seemingly still unaddressed.

Restoration Plaza is currently slated for campus expansion and remodel — the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation in February revealed plans for an 840,000-square-foot campus on Fulton Street.
